The Oakland Army Base Redevelopment: A Once in a Lifetime Opportunity to Revive the City's Economy

The City of Oakland and the Port of Oakland co-own the former Oakland Army Base - a defunct piece of land measuring more than 200 football fields at the foot of the Bay Bridge. This year, the two agencies will sign deals with private developers, putting a 15-year plan into place to reconstruct the site and expand Oakland's capacity as a West Coast trade center. How Oakland chooses to redevelop the Army Base is a once in a lifetime opportunity to put up to 8,000 Oaklanders to work over the next two decades; provide business with a local skilled workforce; and transform our city into an economic engine for the region.

To create real recovery, Oaklanders need real investment in job training, real jobs to support our families, and real access for community members who have been excluded. Reducing unemployment and poverty forms the foundation for community health and raises everyone's quality of life. We can better take care of our families; we can afford quality health care; we can spend more money in our local businesses; and we can have safer, more stable neighborhoods.
